Careful if you are sensitive to light or have epilepsy: strobes switch quickly between bright and dark. Hip-hop and Calm never strobe, just like in the app.

What you need.

Android phone
With USB host (OTG) for USB DMX. Currently only Android is supported.
DMX interface
A USB DMX cable with an FT232 chip, available from about 15 €, or an Art-Net interface on your network. Interfaces with an encrypted protocol are not supported.
DMX fixtures
Moving heads, PAR cans, strobes, haze. Around 4,900 fixture profiles from 144 manufacturers are built in; if yours is missing, you create it yourself.

Which app controls DMX lights automatically to music?

GrooveDMX is an Android app that listens to music through the microphone or a built-in player, detects beat, build-up and drop, and drives a DMX light show from it in real time. It needs no lighting console, no computer and no internet; the lights are connected through a USB DMX cable or Art-Net.

Which lights can I control?

Any DMX fixture: moving heads, PAR cans, LED bars, strobes and haze machines. Around 4,900 fixture profiles from 144 manufacturers are built in, including budget party lights. If a fixture is missing, you create its profile in the app.

How much does GrooveDMX cost?

The app is free and controls up to eight fixtures. Pro is a one-time purchase of $8.99 on Google Play and adds the built-in player, Planned Intelligence and any number of fixtures. Club for commercial use is a one-time $54.99. There is no subscription.

Do I need the internet?

No. The show runs without internet and I run no server. The app itself only sends Art-Net on your own network; for purchases and updates it talks to Google Play.

Does the app record audio?

No. Audio is analysed in memory only and is never stored or transmitted.

Is there a version for the iPhone?

No. Currently only Android is supported.

Which DMX cable do I need?

One with an FT232 chip. It is the cheapest reliable cable and supported out of the box. An Art-Net interface works too.

What do Pro and Club add?

Pro adds the built-in player, Planned Intelligence and any number of fixtures, and from 1.4.5 the remote control: a second phone controls the show over Bluetooth, only the device running the lights needs Pro. Club is for playing commercially: PIN lock, autostart, fallback show, opening hours and quick room switching.

How close is the stage demo to the app?
